KOWIE NATURE RESERVE

Nestling on the eastern banks of the Kowie River, just outside the scenic coastal town of Port Alfred, lies the Kowie Nature Reserve. Covering some 200ha of dense valley bushveld with tree euphorbias and cycads as well as open areas of scrub and grass, the reserve is a peaceful retreat and popular amongst holiday-makers. Visitors can engage in boating, fishing, swimming, hiking (2-hour hiking trail), birding and game viewing. Game species include bushpig, bushbuck, otter, duiker, vervet monkey, and tree and rock dassie. Birdlife abounds here.

Two picnic areas and braai sites enable visitors to spend a relaxing day along the riverside. No accommodation is available in the reserve. Port Alfred has hotels and a caravan and camping site. The reserve is open throughout the year. Opening time: 07h00 to 17h00.

How to get there:
The reserve lies on the north-western outskirts of Port Alfred and is best reached by boat on the Kowie River (recommended). Access by road is possible if driving a 4x4 vehicle with a high ground clearance: Turn off the Bathurst road about 6km from Port Alfred onto the 43 Air School road.
